The 75 Hard Challenge: Mental Toughness or Potential Harm?

In recent years, a fitness challenge called 75 Hard has gained significant traction, drawing thousands of participants annually eager to test their mental toughness and resilience. I’ve tried it myself a couple of times. Didn’t complete each try but gave it a shot. It was originally created by motivational speaker Andy Frisella, the program requires adherents to undertake a rigorous regimen for 75 consecutive days, consisting of two daily 45-minute workouts, consuming one gallon of water, reading 10 pages of a nonfiction book, adhering to a strict diet without cheat meals or alcohol, and facing the consequence of restarting from day one if any slip-ups occur.

With its cult-like following evident on social media platforms like TikTok and Instagram, where daily progress updates abound, and dedicated communities forming on Reddit, the 75 Hard challenge has sparked both fervent enthusiasm and cautious skepticism. While proponents laud its capacity to instill discipline, confidence, and the ability to persevere through adversity, health experts raise concerns about its potential for harm, particularly for certain demographic groups.

At its core, the appeal of 75 Hard lies in its promise to cultivate mental fortitude akin to conquering monumental physical feats like an Iron Man or scaling Mount Everest. Participants often cite improved confidence, weight loss, and a sense of accomplishment as outcomes of completing the challenge. The program’s structure, with its daily tasks and absence of rest days, aims to foster habits of consistency and resilience, qualities deemed essential for personal growth.

However, the rigid nature of 75 Hard raises red flags for some psychologists and exercise experts. While acknowledging its potential benefits, they caution against its suitability for all individuals, particularly those who may be predisposed to injury or mental health challenges. The demanding exercise requirements, exceeding standard recommendations by federal health officials, pose a risk of overexertion and injury, especially for those unaccustomed to regular physical activity.

Moreover, the strict dietary restrictions and prohibition of alcohol may not align with everyone’s needs or goals, potentially exacerbating unhealthy relationships with food or triggering individuals with a history of eating disorders. The absence of flexibility in the program could undermine its sustainability for long-term adherence, as individuals may struggle to maintain such stringent practices beyond the 75-day duration.

In response to these concerns, some experts advocate for a more personalized approach to goal-setting and behavior change, emphasizing the importance of autonomy and intrinsic motivation. Rather than prescribing a one-size-fits-all challenge like 75 Hard, they suggest tailoring wellness practices to individual preferences and needs, promoting moderation and self-compassion over rigid adherence to rules.

Recognizing the need for alternatives, modified versions of the challenge, such as 75 Soft, have emerged, offering reduced requirements to accommodate varying fitness levels and preferences. By embracing a more flexible and inclusive approach, these adaptations aim to retain the essence of mental resilience and discipline while mitigating potential risks associated with extreme rigidity.

In conclusion, while the 75 Hard challenge may hold value for some individuals seeking to push their limits and foster personal growth, its intense demands and lack of flexibility raise legitimate concerns about its suitability and long-term sustainability. As with any fitness or wellness endeavor, it’s essential to prioritize individual well-being and listen to one’s body, seeking guidance from healthcare professionals when necessary.

Ultimately, the pursuit of mental toughness should not come at the expense of physical or emotional health.

Embracing the Importance of Loving Humanity:

Cultivating Empathy in a Connected World

In a world often marred by division and conflict, it’s easy to lose sight of the fundamental truth that binds us all: our shared humanity. Yet, it is precisely this recognition of our interconnectedness that holds the key to fostering a more compassionate and empathetic society.

At the core of loving humanity is the acknowledgment that every individual, regardless of race, religion, or background, is deserving of dignity and respect. When we cultivate love and empathy towards others, we transcend the barriers that often divide us and recognize the inherent worth of every human being.

In today’s fast-paced and often impersonal world, it’s more important than ever to pause and consider the experiences and struggles of those around us. Empathy allows us to walk in another’s shoes, to understand their joys and sorrows, and to offer support and compassion in times of need.

Moreover, embracing love for humanity is not just a moral imperative, but a practical necessity for building a more harmonious and sustainable world. By recognizing our interconnectedness, we come to understand that the well-being of one person is intricately linked to the well-being of all. When we extend kindness and empathy towards others, we create ripple effects that can inspire positive change and foster a sense of unity and belonging.

In a time marked by polarization and societal challenges, let us recommit ourselves to the importance of loving humanity. Let us strive to cultivate empathy in our interactions, to reach out to those in need, and to build bridges of understanding across divides. For in embracing our shared humanity, we unlock the potential for a brighter and more compassionate future for all.

“Motivation is what gets you started, habit is what keeps you going” Jim Rohn

This quote encapsulates a fundamental truth about human behavior and achievement. Let’s break it down:

  1. Motivation is what gets you started: Motivation refers to the drive, desire, or inspiration that compels you to take action toward a particular goal or task. It’s that initial spark that propels you into motion. Motivation can come from various sources such as personal goals, external rewards, a sense of purpose, or even just the excitement of starting something new. However, motivation tends to fluctuate over time. It can be strong one day and weak the next, influenced by factors like mood, environment, or external circumstances.
  2. Habit is what keeps you going: Unlike motivation, which can be fleeting, habits are ingrained patterns of behavior that become automatic over time. When something becomes a habit, you do it almost without thinking. Habits are formed through repetition and consistency. Once established, they have a powerful influence on your actions and decisions. Even when motivation wanes, habits persist, providing a reliable structure to keep you moving forward. They serve as the backbone of long-term progress and success.

In essence, while motivation may kickstart your journey toward a goal, it’s the development and maintenance of positive habits that sustain your progress over the long haul. Motivation is like the initial fuel that ignites the engine, while habit acts as the steady stream of energy that keeps it running smoothly. Therefore, cultivating productive habits is crucial for achieving sustained success and reaching your full potential.

As an entrepreneur working toward his (or her) goals, maintaining good health habits is essential for sustaining energy, focus, and productivity. Here are some recommendations that I fully back:

  1. Regular Exercise: Incorporate regular physical activity into your routine. Exercise not only improves your physical health but also enhances mental clarity, reduces stress, and boosts mood. Aim for a mix of cardiovascular exercises, strength training, and flexibility exercises to improve overall fitness.
  2. Healthy Eating Habits: Fuel your body with nutritious foods that provide sustained energy and support cognitive function. Focus on a balanced diet rich in fruits, vegetables, whole grains, lean proteins, and healthy fats. Avoid excessive consumption of processed foods, sugary snacks, and caffeine, as they can lead to energy crashes and decreased productivity.
  3. Adequate Sleep: Prioritize quality sleep to optimize cognitive function, mood regulation, and overall well-being. Aim for 7-9 hours of uninterrupted sleep each night and establish a consistent sleep schedule. Create a relaxing bedtime routine and minimize screen time before bed to improve sleep quality.
  4. Stress Management: Develop effective stress management techniques to cope with the demands of entrepreneurship. This may include mindfulness meditation, deep breathing exercises, yoga, or engaging in hobbies and activities that promote relaxation and enjoyment. Managing stress is crucial for preventing burnout and maintaining resilience in the face of challenges.
  5. Regular Breaks and Time Off: Avoid the temptation to work incessantly without breaks. Incorporate regular breaks throughout your workday to recharge and prevent mental fatigue. Additionally, schedule time off to rest, recharge, and pursue activities outside of work. This helps prevent burnout and allows you to return to your work with renewed energy and focus.
  6. Stay Hydrated: Drink plenty of water throughout the day to stay hydrated and maintain optimal cognitive function. Dehydration can impair concentration, memory, and overall performance. Keep a water bottle handy and sip water regularly, especially during periods of intense work or physical activity.
  7. Connect with Others: Cultivate social connections and maintain a support network of friends, family, and fellow entrepreneurs. Social support provides emotional resilience, encouragement, and perspective during challenging times. Make time for social activities, networking events, and meaningful conversations to foster connections and maintain a healthy work-life balance.

By prioritizing these health habits, you can enhance your overall well-being, optimize your performance as an entrepreneur, and sustain long-term success in pursuing your goals. Remember that investing in your health is not only beneficial for your personal well-being but also crucial for your professional growth and success. Press on!

5 Life Lessons I Wish I Knew at 20: A Reflection at 33

In retrospect, life’s journey is filled with twists and turns, and the lessons we learn along the way shape our perspectives and choices. At 33 years old, I find myself reflecting on the past and contemplating the five key lessons I wish I had known at the age of 20. Join me on this journey as I share insights that could potentially spare you from making the same mistakes I did over the last 13 years.

  1. Understanding Money Better:
Looking back, one of the primary things I would have done differently is to gain a better understanding of money. Personal finance is rarely taught in schools, leaving us unprepared for managing wealth, savings, and cultivating a healthy relationship with income and expenses. Whether adopting the conservative Dave Ramsey approach or the more risk-oriented Grant Cardone mindset, the key is to find a perspective that aligns with your financial goals and principles.
  2. Investing in High-Paying Skills:
If I could turn back time, I would invest my time, energy, and attention into acquiring high-paying skills. In the rapidly evolving landscape of the job market, skills such as video editing, software engineering, coding, marketing, and sales hold immense value. While conventional advice often emphasizes secure job paths, the true wealth lies in entrepreneurship and cultivating skills that open doors to financial success.
  3. Taking Care of Physical Well-being:
Physical health is wealth, a lesson that became apparent to me as I aged. If given the chance to advise my younger self, I would advocate for moderation in alcohol consumption and a greater focus on maintaining overall well-being. The mind-body connection is a crucial aspect of a fulfilling life, and investing time in healthy habits from a young age can yield long-term benefits.
  4. Embracing Humility and a Growth Mindset:
At 20, it’s easy to feel invincible and believe we have life figured out. However, adopting humility and cultivating a growth mindset is crucial. Recognizing that we don’t know everything opens the door to continuous learning and personal development. As a 33-year-old, I value humility and the realization that there is always more to discover and understand.
  5. Trying More Things and Embracing Variety:
Perhaps my favorite lesson learned over the years is the importance of trying new things. At 20, I wish I had been more open to diverse experiences, from rock climbing and kayaking to playing instruments and exploring unconventional paths. Embracing variety not only enriches life but also helps break free from monotonous routines, preventing the feeling of being stuck.

Life is a journey filled with opportunities for growth and learning. While I can’t go back in time, sharing these insights serves as a guide for those navigating their own paths. Embracing financial literacy, investing in valuable skills, prioritizing physical well-being, fostering humility and a growth mindset, and trying new things can contribute to a more fulfilling and successful life. As we continue to evolve, may we all find wisdom in the lessons that shape our unique journeys.

5 Essential Sleep Hacks

As many of you know I want to be able to operate at the top of my game as best I can in every area of my life for as long as possible.  Sleep is one of those incredibly important areas I want to focus on for today’s newsletter.

I’m training for my 4th Ironman taking place in Cozumel in November and in order for me to be ready for every training day leading up to the race, I need to be rested. It’s imperative that I get as much quality sleep as possible, with a focus on quality, so that my body has enough time to recover, restore and regenerate.

I’ve put together a short list of 5 hacks that seem to be working for me at the moment and I’ll probably do these for the foreseeable future. I included some links for each so you can check out what I’m talking about.

I thought I’d share them with you since they’ve helped me and maybe they can help you if you are someone that maybe struggles getting a good nights rest.

If you have any questions, let me know.

These are the 5 things I’ve implemented into my

nighttime routine to hack my sleep:

Cell phone: I put my phone outside my room. Getting up at 455am is no easy task and that’s why I purposely put my phone (which I use as my alarm), outside my bedroom. This forces me to get out of bed and walk all the way downstairs (yes i can still here my alarm) to shut it off.  This increases my chances of staying up and not going back to sleep

Eye mask:  I can’t believe it took me this long to figure out these things… One of the most important things for high quality sleep is that you are in a dark room, well the eye mask takes care of that.  Even though they don’t last throughout the whole night it’s great to help you get to sleep.  The one that I use, it has 88 thousand reviews Amazon

Mouth tape:  I know you’ve heard me say this before but mouth tape is integral to getting high quality sleep.  It forces you to breathe through your nose which increases oxygen and minimizes your ability to snore giving your body more efficiency to rest through the night and it minimizes bad breath.  I use Hostage Tape,  you can check them out and buy it here, it’s .83 cents per day Hostage Tape

Sleep tracker:  Whether you are into analytics or not this is great for you to become more aware of how many hours you’re truly getting each night… I recommend the whoop strap (you can get one for free here WHOOP Strap).  The one I’m currently using the Oura Ring… They are both great but the price points differ greatly up front…

Sunlight alarm clock:  This mimics natural sunlight and you can set it to go off when you want to wake up and it will force you to get out of bed because of the strong light… At this point your eye mask has fallen off, this is the one I’ve used as an alternate to my phone and it has nearly 25,000 reviews Amazon

Have a great week!
