GETTING YOUR MINDSET READY FOR THE RECESSION

In my last blog post, I discussed how you can take the first step in preparing for the recession that’s quickly approaching. This is going to be a really tough next few years and I’m already seeing it in real-time.

“Well people, this is your pilot speaking and it is time for you to brace for impact!”

One instance of the recession hitting everyone’s pockets (including mine) is evidence-based on an email I received from a brand I was in contract to work with.

I posted a video on Instagram (you can watch it here, instagram.com/zachrancey) about how I was supposed to be partnering with a supplement company to do a paid post for their new vitamin launch. I was really excited about this brand deal because it was a company I have been wanting to work with and when they reached out to me to collaborate I jumped on the opportunity. Here’s what happened next…

How do I know the recession is here?

Unfortunately, I received an email from their marketing team that said they are no longer moving forward with the campaign. After doing my due diligence, I found out that they canceled all of their partnerships with all of their influencers. Why did they do this and how does the recession play a role in their decision?

Here’s why:

Inflation has taken a toll on almost everyone and everything. Food, rent, gas, utilities, and just about everything under the sun have gone up in price. Because of this uptick in the cost of goods business’ raw materials, packaging costs, utility bills, and other items on their balance sheet have gone up in price resulting in a much higher bottom line just for them to break even. I see a ton of other brands doing the same and after discussing with my agent it’s clear that brands are pulling back on their marketing budgets.

So what should your mindset be going into this recession…

The most important mindset shift here is living like you are broke. You must have the mindset that every dollar matters and live as if you are broke. Having the mindset that you don’t have any money will give you the ability to save all the money you currently have because maintaining is all we are trying to do here. I myself, have been reeling back on all my spending including canceling a recent vacation, (airfare and hotels have skyrocketed in price in the recent weeks and months.)

With all that being said I’m going to keep it short and simple:

“Live as if you are broke.”

If you do this you will put yourself in a good spot to get through these hard financial times.

Sincerely, authentically, genuinely,

START PREPARING FOR THE TOUGH YEARS AHEAD

With gas prices now at an all-time high, food costs increasing and housing costs also on the uptick it’s important that you start preparing for the tough years ahead. Some of the biggest companies in the world including Apple, Tesla, and Coinbase have all frozen new hiring and some other large corporations are beginning to lay off workers. The recession is coming, so how do you prepare?

This week I posted a video on Instagram talking about how, in challenging times, the gap widens between the strong and the weak.

It’s crucial that you start to implement systems that help you save money and that put you in the best position for when times get rough. The next few years are going to expose a lot of people in numerous ways.

There are simple fixes to your current lifestyle that will help you deal with the shock much better so you don’t get affected as bad.

YOUR FIRST STEP in preparing for the tough year ahead of us is to create a fixed monthly expense sheet. Getting your personal finances in order is vital and this is the first step. This is a tool that will give you a precise dollar amount of what it costs you to live each and every single month. Your expense sheet should include your car expenses, housing expenses, insurances, phone bills, and internet – it should even include haircuts, air filters, paper towels, and trash bags.

Below is a picture of what my fixed monthly expense sheet looks like. Feel free to copy mine or you can go on Etsy and purchase a digital spreadsheet that automatically generates all your numbers for you once you fill them in. I recommend @mywealthdiary which I follow on Instagram here is a link to her Etsy store.

Knowing exactly how much money it takes for you to survive is the first step in your personal finance journey

It is a great move that you can take today to put yourself in a better position for the future.

THE SECOND STEP I recommend is saving a minimum of 10% of your income. Every single month or biweekly when you get your paycheck, you should be instantly transferring 10% of your income into a savings account. Preserving your cash is vital if you want to make it through a recession/depression.

These are two actionable steps that you can take immediately that are going to make your life 1% better and allow you to step into the greatest version of yourself for the future. WHY EAT A BALANCED DIET?

Food. The most integral part of keeping our body nourished and alive. It’s so underrated the importance of eating a balanced diet and even though it’s talked about to great lengths it still can’t be overstated enough how vital it is to fuel your body with nutrient-dense food. There are millions of reasons why eating a healthy diet is important and here are just a fraction of the many reasons why.

LIVING A LONG LIFE

We all want to live a long and happy life and this is impossible if you aren’t feeling well in your own body. Don’t you want to be able to see your children grow up or have the capacity to get on a plane and travel or at the bare minimum have the ability to get out of bed every single day? Well, if you choose to eat processed foods and sugar you will be killing off all the healthy cells that keep your body up to maintenance. Our body is like a car, every so often you need to change the oil and rotate the tires maybe just a quick wash every once in a while. These are the things that keep your car running smoothly and efficiently. Our body works the same way. We must drink enough water which is basically like putting the proper type of gas in our car. We must exercise daily which I would compare to rotating the tires or getting an oil change and last but not least we must fuel our body with healthy foods.

Your food choices should be as close to their natural form as possible.

Easier said than done right? These days food marketing is so sus that it’s nearly impossible to really understand if what you’re buying from the grocery store is actually healthy. That’s why it’s vital to take matters into your own hands and read an educational book or consult with a dietician/nutritionist. Your food choices should be as close to their natural form as possible. You won’t find that in processed food because processed foods aren’t natural. Processed foods are manufactured in a factory and are filled with high amounts of sugar, sodium, and many other unpronounceable ingredients in order to preserve their shelf life. They may taste good and fill you up, but ultimately they will leave you feeling lethargic, and only craving more because of the excessive amounts of carbs. Healthy foods tend to be more expensive than a McDouble but you will be saving more money on the backend because you won’t have to pay hundreds of thousands of dollars in medical bills just to keep your heart beating or your blood flowing at the right levels.

As much as I discussed why you should eat healthier to live a longer and higher quality of life into old age I think it’s just as crucial to understanding how eating healthier relates to your life today. After changing your diet from a processed, sugary, fast food, microwave-based, fried everything diet to a whole-food, plant-based, protein-heavy diet you will immediately feel higher energy levels, better digestion, and you’ll notice you have unwavering sharp mental clarity. Don’t believe me? Try it for yourself. Do a short test on yourself paying attention to how you feel after you eat. Eat a high protein meal for instance and pay attention to how you feel after you finish eating and also pay attention to how long it takes before you are hungry again. Chances are the higher protein meal will sustain you longer during the day vs a meal higher in carbs. The science is there. The evidence is there. Do not take my word for it, try it yourself. Everyone has a different food relationship so it’s important to be guided by what feels and works best for you.

So what are the things that you think keep your body running smoothly and efficiently? Make a list of small action steps that you can implement and apply today. Send me an email at zacharyrance@gmail.com on what you think are some things that you can do better to eat a healthier more balanced diet, I love reading my reader’s feedback.

HABITS

“Motivation is what gets you started, habit is what keeps you going.” – Jim Rohn

When first working with a new life coaching client I try really hard to dive deep into their current habits and ask questions that will help me uncover not only their bad habits – but their good habits as well.

Habits are what you do on a daily basis automatically without having to think that ultimately become easier and easier over time.

Nothing is more important to success than habits and I’ll tell you why.

The first time you wake up at 5am its tough, the second time you get up super early its still tough but after a few consistent days under your belt beating the sun not only does it get easier but you start to enjoy it more as well. It goes without being said that having good, productive, efficient habits are important but the real power of habits is when you solidify a new habit to focus on the next. When that daily reading practice becomes so ingrained into your brain that you no longer have to think or try or feel obligated to get it done, that’s when the magic happens. Why is this so powerful? Well, besides the fact that it becomes easier and you no longer need to use your will power muscle or spend energy and attention on performing the habit the real power comes from the ability you now have to implement a new habit. This is what I want to focus on. Make a list of 10 habits that you think would benefit you overtime that would lead to living your best life, some of them might include a daily meditation practice, consistent exercise, doing the dishes as soon as you’re done eating.  Overtime incorporating new productive habits into your life will give you this new ability to always be adding new and improved ways of living that will ultimately lead you to greater success.

So, what are some of my habits? Well I have a few non-negotiables that I perform every single day, without fail and they include but are not limited to:

  • Make my bed (daily last 3 months)
  • Meditate (daily last 4 years)
  • Read (daily last 5 years)
  • Listen to audible instead of music (daily last 9 months)
  • Fast until 1230pm (daily last 4 months)
Incorporating a new habit is only possible when an old habit becomes automatic – can you see the compound effect at work?

You don’t cash in your results on your habits immediately, there is a lag from habit implementation to swing results. It takes time for your habits to show that they are working but there are some habits that you don’t need to expect results from because you just know they are going to work. I call this trusting the process and a few of my life coaching clients have a though time when they don’t see results immediately. Do not worry about results, focus on your actions. If a basketball team spent the entire 60 minutes of a game looking at the results (in this case the scoreboard) they would never be able to score a point let alone get back and play defense. Do not focus on the fruits of your labor focus on the actions of your labor. This requires a lot of mindfulness, its not easy to stay in the moment and give all of your attention to right here right now but this is required to make greatness happen in your life.

At the bottom of this blog post is a list of good habits that you can perform on a daily basis that when they become automatic will allow you to focus on new habits.

  • Waking up at 5am
  • Daily reading
  • Daily meditation
  • Making your bed
  • Exercising Cleaning the dishes after you eat
  • Putting stuff back where it belongs when your done using it
  • Getting rid of 1 thing everyday
  • Journaling
  • Setting your most important tasks for the day
  • Calling a friend
  • Writing down something that you are grateful for
